My Beautiful World

There are few places in the world where you can feel the full force of Mother Nature. Augrabies is one of them. Here, the Orange River plunges from a height of 56 metres. Called the ‘Place of Great Noise’ by the Khoi, the thunder of Augrabies Falls can be heard up to 40 kilometres away. Journey to this desert region and discover a roaring oasis.

GO: Over 120 kilometres from Upington is Augrabies National Park. Augrabies Falls is situated at the heart of the Northern Cape reserve. People flock from far and wide to witness this spectacular waterfall in action.

SEE: Admire the sheer magnitude of these cascades from one of the six viewing platforms. The water surges at about 40 cubic metres per second, carving out a breathtaking granite basin.

Trek through the Augrabies National Park to uncover its unique beauty. The reserve protects more than 55 000 hectares of land. Striking plants such as the quiver tree and camel thorn jut from the arid earth, providing shelter and nourishment for wildlife. This area is home to approximately 49 mammals. Towers of giraffes peek above the treetops, while black backed jackals and elusive leopards roam below.

Marvel at the region’s millennia-old artistry at Swart Rante, a series of black hills that undulate on the horizon. In the height of summer, these igneous rocks can reach temperatures of up to 70°C.

Summit Moon Rock for a panoramic view of the park and its surroundings. Perched atop the large granite dome, onlookers can appreciate the area’s rugged beauty.

DO: Embark on the Klipspringer Hiking Trail for an untamed experience of the region. The three-day trail leads adventurers through rough-hewn terrain, passing main attractions such as the Augrabies Falls gorge. Rock hopping antelope known as klipspringer are frequent visitors along this route, and can often be seen bounding across the boulders.

Cool off on a trip down the Orange River. The longest river in South Africa, it trickles into nearby towns, forming waterways that support local communities. Thrill-seekers can get their adrenaline pumping on a white water rafting tour with Orange River Rafting, while those who would prefer to stay dry can savour its beauty on a sunset boat cruise with the Khamkirri resort.

In this wild and unruly region, the power of the natural world comes to life. Venture here and soak up the awe-inspiring greatness of Augrabies.
