Cruise through the golden gates of these unparalleled highlands
Colossal rock formations bathed in sunlight erupt from the Golden Gate Highlands National Park. Are they ochre, amber, or rose-toned? The multihued outcrops are the reason many visit this part of the Free State, but there’s more to be marvelled at. Cruise between these contours, wander into the forest, and savour traditional food prepared by the Basotho people who call the region home.
Once you reach Golden Gate, 20 kilometres from Clarens, stay on the R712 which immerses drivers in sandstone tapestries and lush fields. There are two detours veering into the wilderness, both starting at the Glen Reenen Petrol Station. Take in the view from Generaal’s Kop on Blesbok Loop, or watch scavengers devour a carcass at the vulture feeding project on Oribi Loop.
Over 200 bird species fly over this landscape, while caracals, wildebeest, zebra and eland saunter through it. There are several pathways to encounter them. The 28-kilometre Ribbok Hiking Trail includes an optional overnight stay and natural swimming pools. At the Echo Ravine Hike, scuttle over rocks and under overhangs which were once frequented by San people. Their paintings can still be found in the park. Guided by a traditional healer, discover the medicinal properties of plants that have been used for centuries on the Herbal Trail. This intrinsic knowledge offers a unique perspective of the surrounds.
At the Basotho Cultural Village, locals welcome visitors into a kraal designed to provide insight into their way of life. Once the chief has given consent, a guide leads guests through the hamlet, introducing them to prominent figures in the community. Kneel before the bone thrower and ask him to read your fortune, or play a traditional game of morabaraba. There’s no better way to understand a place than by interacting with its people.
With numerous options to explore Golden Gate Highlands National Park, you’ll find quality in every crevice of the region. Slow down, let the lush scenery speak for itself, and encounter natural splendour that has no parallel.
