Immerse yourself in Champagne Valley’s chorus of culture
Champagne Valley is a landscape of epic proportions. In this corner of central Drakensberg, South Africa’s tallest peaks tower above the majestic vista. Zebras roam across the vast hills as hundreds of bird species soar above. All around, the voices of the nation’s most iconic choir echo off the mountains. Along the R600 that meanders through the town of Winterton, opportunities for adventure and cultural experiences await at every turn.
In the distance, the crests of Cathkin Peak and Monks Cowl trace the sky. Champagne Castle rises up alongside them. Legend has it that the mountain got its name after the first people to ascend it accidentally broke a bottle of bubbly on their journey. At 3 377 metres, this is the third highest summit in the country. Scaling its peak entails a multi-day trek via Gray’s Pass. Easier ambles include a walk to Sterkspruit Falls, or the short but steep journey to the Sphinx rock formation from the base of Monks Cowl. At places such as Four Rivers Rafting & Adventures, thrilling experiences beyond hiking emerge from archery, ziplining, abseiling, and quad biking.
A tapestry of creativity colours the hamlets below the mountains. The Kwazulu Weavers continue their long-standing practice of using wooden looms to spin wool and cotton rugs. Deeper in the valley, weekly concerts take place at the Drakensberg Boys Choir School. Established in 1967, the ensemble is revered around the world. Each melody they perform imbues the landscape with a celebratory atmosphere, be it traditional songs or an acapella take on Bohemian Rhapsody.
Equally powerful performances are on exhibit five minutes away. African fish eagles plunge for their prey in the water, while a Verreaux’s eagle spreads its wings – an impressive display spanning over two metres. At the Falcon Ridge Bird of Prey Centre, injured raptors from the area are rehabilitated, while falconry shows educate people about the incredible features of these birds.
A three-hour drive from Durban, Champagne Valley encapsulates the magic of the Drakensberg. Whether exploring the terrain or admiring the local artistry, there are endless experiences to pursue. This sublime landscape is woven in wonder.
