Leonie Brown’s abstract paintings inspire awe. The movement of colours and patterns transports viewers into other worlds. Yet when people stand before a blank canvas in Brown’s art classes, it can be intimidating. “I specialise in teaching people who can’t draw a stick figure,” she says. While children are often encouraged to express their creativity, there are many adults who never had the chance and may never dabble in art. This only serves to compound their inhibitions. But thanks to Brown’s guidance and insight, potential artists are emerging from their cocoons.

“Painting for me is an expression of where I was, where I’m at, and where I’m going,” she says. With a degree in Fine Art from the University of Potchefstroom, Brown has exhibited across South Africa. In 2004, she began LifeArt Studio and School to share her creative means of expression. Here, Brown imparts her knowledge of colour, form, and mediums with adults eager to explore their untapped talent. Beginning with pencil and charcoal, she works individually with each member until they’re ready to enter the world of oil and acrylic paint and hone their style.

Brown’s approach has been invaluable not only to stagnant creatives, but also people struggling with their mental health. “There’s a lot of life lessons that come through art,” she says. These classes present an opportunity for people to project their inner emotions and reflect on their journeys. Having begun without an inkling of how to paint, artists leave with more than just a detailed canvas – they have a better picture of themselves.
