Meet the horse rider who beat death and took the ultimate leap of confidence
Julian Grobler yanks the horse’s reins, steers his horse over the obstacle, and lands with ease. Considering his childhood, it’s incredible to see Grobler perform these showjumping stunts. He was assumed dead while still in the womb, almost passed away during birth, and was then diagnosed with cancer at 18 months old. “It was hard for me and my family but we got through it,” Grobler says. He beat the odds, but his self-esteem plummeted, leaving him in a blanket of introversion. Then Grobler started horse riding and took a leap towards confidence.
At the age of 12, he joined IEA Elite, an equestrian centre that develops the talent and character of young riders. When Grobler began his showjumping journey, he was extremely shy and demotivated. But learning to ride and strengthening the bond with his steed has brought him out of his shell. “My horse makes me feel very happy and excited,” he says. Achieving in the arena, Grobler has since taken first and second place at numerous showjumping events.
Grobler’s equestrian achievements have also imbued him with an elevated sense of self and a new spring in his step. As well as honing the skills that come with riding, his academic results have improved and Grobler is making new friends at school. “When you find your passion, confidence follows,” he says.
