Over a hundred years ago, a farmer and his wife stopped to rest on a long journey. Before them, sandstone cliffs shone with a lustrous tone as the sun set. Marvelling at the sight, the farmer named the area Golden Gate. Today, the light on these peaks is just as beautiful, calling to adventurers.

The Golden Gate Highlands National Park is situated at the foothills of the Maluti Mountains. Spanning 340 square kilometres in the Free State province, this reserve beckons to be explored.

Brandwag Buttress, the protruding cliff that inspired the region’s name, emits a captivating ochre glow. Beneath it, the terrain teems with wildlife. At the Basotho Cultural Village, expand your understanding of Sotho culture and observe rich customs. A living museum built in the style of the 18th century, it reflects traditional ways of life.

Experience this dynamic landscape and take a drive along the Oribi and Blesbok loops. The Vulture Feeding Project is a highlight of the Oribi circuit, where you can watch the birds dining from a hide.
On foot, hike the Echo Ravine, a one-hour trail that leads to a breathtaking cavern. In the rainy season, water vapour hangs in the air, creating a mystic atmosphere.
Having stood sentry to this region for centuries, the glittering mountains of Golden Gate continue to allure intrepid travellers from far and wide.
