Elgin: The valley ripe with natural wonders, wine, and warm hospitality
Hidden in the rolling hills of the Overberg is a pocket of land where everything grows. Once an empty basin, Elgin Valley has blossomed into the Western Cape’s most breathtaking farming region. Take a bite out of this refreshing retreat and discover why it's ripe with wonder.
GO: Drive 45-minutes from the bustling city of Cape Town to Elgin Valley. Directly adjacent to the UNESCO protected Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve, this area is home to over 100 orchards and vineyards.
SEE: Elgin Valley is rooted in apples. During the Second Boer War, medical officer Sir Antonie Viljoen planted the first commercial apple orchard while on house arrest. Since then, the landscape has flourished into a famed community responsible for producing more than 60% of South Africa’s apples.
While Elgin Valley is renowned for its delectable fruit, it’s become increasingly popular for its cool-climate wines. Situated near the South Atlantic Ocean, it has moderate temperatures year-round. The unique conditions allow for the gradual ripening of grapes, resulting in some of the best wines the country has to offer. Visit Elgin Vintners for a taste of their award-winning bottles, or relish local favourites at Almenkerk Wine Estate.
DO: Take a trip back in time with the Ceres Rail Company. From Cape Town, board a 1948 steam train named Jessica and chug through the Cape’s lush countryside.
Stop off at the Elgin Railway Market to savour the sweetness of this valley. At a restored apple warehouse, the steam-punk inspired market boasts craftsmanship, striking art, and local cuisine. Here, the aromas of Cape Malay curries and Amarula fudge whirl between fans made from antique aeroplane propellers.
As dusk approaches, check into Cherry Glamping and watch this homey hamlet light up. Located deep in the forest, luxury tents give nature lovers a front-row seat to the valley’s wild nightlife featuring free-roaming zebras and endless constellations.
Abounding with prized wines, hospitality, and creativity, your glass will always be half full in Elgin Valley.
