Travellers from around the world flock to Bali to experience its wonders. But beyond the pristine beaches and ancient temples, the island is facing social inequalities, animal welfare issues, and pollution that has reached dramatic proportions in recent years. Activist Manuel Bergmann is focused on bettering the Indonesian province. “When you think about Bali it’s like this Instagrammable place, but you don’t often see the other side on social media or online,” he says. Now, he’s empowering others to live sustainably and make a positive impact on the island.

Bergmann began Coaching for Cause, an online platform connecting NGOs, coaches, and people wanting to lead more sustainable lives. From lessons on climate activism to achieving a zero waste lifestyle, they offer programmes in a variety of different topics. There are courses on using photography to create awareness about wildlife issues, and how to have a low environmental impact when travelling. Coaching for Cause has amplified the efforts of a number of non-profits in their environmental and humanitarian causes. A percentage of the cost of the courses goes towards an organisation the platform has partnered with. They support initiatives such as Crisis Kitchen Bali in their pursuits to feed people experiencing hunger, and EcosystemImpact to address wildlife poaching and habitat loss.

With this online community, people from all around the globe are educating themselves to help Bali and the world. “It's very important to show the reality of both sides so that when you come there as a tourist, you leave the island making it better than before,” Bergmann says. Through collaboration and unity, he is edging towards a greener future and establishing a movement of sustainability.

Footage by Manuel Bergmann was used in the creation of this film.
