Kalk Bay is a bohemian treasure trove. Established as a military outpost in the 1700s, it has prospered to become one of the trendiest spots in the Western Cape. Rustic cafés and antique stores characterise the main road, which runs alongside the coastline. At the harbour, anglers compete for the catch of the day. The shouts and chatter of locals raise the energy, but the most powerful element here is the tumultuous waves at sea.

Journeying to the lighthouse at the end of the pier can be risky business. Monstrous swells crash against the walls, sending salty water metres in the air. For visitors out on a stroll, it’s an unexpected shower. But locals are accustomed to this spectacle. Many earn a livelihood here by catching fish from their colourful boats. Meanwhile, hungry seals frequent the dock in the hopes of swiping their spoils. The sight of these creatures sprawled out under the sun is a Kalk Bay marvel.

Amid the harbour’s bustle, Kalky’s serves battered hake with a squeeze of lemon – a quintessential Kalk Bay meal. Unconventional eateries are a significant slice of the town’s culture. The Brass Bell rests on the water’s edge, boasting multiple seating areas, including a deck by the tidal pools and a pub resembling a ship’s cabin. Just down the road, a waiter jots the day’s specials on a chalkboard at Olympia Café. Rumour has it nothing comes close to their pastries. After dancing up a storm at Cape to Cuba, grab a sugar cone from Ice Café to cool down.

The train from Simonstown rattles the village’s daily hum, as the railways splits the harbour from the eclectic suburb. Boutiques strewn with trinkets and bespoke garments line the cobblestone alleys. At Kalk Bay Books, stacks of novels by South African authors kiss the ceiling. But the height of charm sits at vintage stores like Kalk Bay Trading Post, which is filled with hoards of curated memorabilia.

Half an hour away from Cape Town, Kalk Bay reveals its true draw to those who linger. This seaside village, with its hidden delights in every nook, deserves to be savoured. Set your inhibitions free and let the refreshing breeze wash over you.
