Born from a volcano, this is how Tenerife became the island of eternal spring

My Beautiful World

Captivating, mysterious, and vivid, Tenerife is the island of eternal spring. The largest of all the Canary Islands in the Spanish archipelago, it’s more than just its sea-hugging resorts. With its balmy climate, natural heritage, and vibrant culture, Tenerife’s depths are enthralling.

The Macaronesian island was formed three million years ago as a result of volcanic eruptions from Mount Teide. Journey up the iconic mountain in a cable car and be transported over 3 000 metres high. The active volcano is at the centre of the island and marks the highest peak in Spain. Soar over this geological gem where lava flows between craters several metres below. After returning from a sky-high altitude, embrace the ground beneath your feet along Tenerife’s black sand beaches caused by the lava. Pump up the adrenaline and surf the wild waves at Playa Jardin or go snorkeling among 300 species of fish. Dive into the waters along the towns of Las Galletas or Los Gigantes, and discover the shipwrecks of fishing and cargo vessels.

Back on land, explore the 16th century town of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The quaint pedestrian streets are lined with stone buildings illuminated in colour. This is where street musicians and commuters convene amid restaurants and bars humming with activity. The historic town is home to Tenerife’s only cathedral. The 18th-century Catedral de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios dominates the main square with its neo-gothic façade and elaborate window design.

Journey south of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the island’s capital, to the Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Candelaria. The shrine is dedicated to the Virgin of Candelaria, patron saint of the Canary Islands. Drawing over two million pilgrims each year, the Roman Catholic church stands proudly with its eye-catching murals of saints and angels.

Tenerife is the island where year-round sun reaches even the most remote villages. Steeped in adventure and history from its highest mountaintop to the chasms of the sea, its beauty is endless.
