In Cape Town, South Africa, dogs without shelters have to deal with extremes. From the scorching summer sun to the cold, wet days of winter, they face harsh conditions throughout the year. Shaun and Aneska Spies saw the needs of these dogs in low-income areas during a vaccination drive to stop diseases from spreading. They realised how many people’s financial situations prevented them from being able to create a shielded space for their dogs. So, the couple decided to make use of their free time and woodworking skills to build kennels for canines in need.

Through their initiative Kennels For a Cause, individuals and organisations fund their efforts to supply dogs with shelter. For those that want to get involved but can’t afford to, Aneska and Shaun welcome donations of supplies and materials. “It means a lot to us to be able to do this, knowing that we are changing dogs' lives for the better,” Aneska says. Harnessing the power of the community, they are making it possible for people of all backgrounds to care for animals.

Thanks to their kennels, there are over 40 happy and safe dogs in Somerset West. But the couple haven’t reached their goal yet – they want to build and donate over 100 kennels a month. “It’s so rewarding to be able to give dogs their own home that will protect them from the rain, the wind, and the sun,” Aneska says. “Any small act of kindness can drastically change a life.”
