Oahu: The Gathering Place for Hawaiian royals, big wave surfers, and adventurers
Blending historic sites and modern vibrance, Oahu oozes a diversity of remarkable attractions. This is the third largest island of the Hawaiian archipelago, known as ‘The Gathering Place’. Journey here and experience a buffet of feasts, fireworks, and natural vistas.
Formerly a resort for Hawaiian royals in the 1800s, Waikiki is the pulse of Oahu. Home to a plethora of beaches, the neighbourhood epitomises island life. Paddle boarders and families with children may prefer the calm saltwater lagoon of Ala Moana Beach Park. This tranquil seashore is surrounded by a park with tennis courts, jogging paths, and snack stalls. If you’re looking for a peaceful morning swim, take a detour to Kailua and discover Lanikai Beach, meaning “heavenly sea”. Sink your feet in the silky white sand and sapphire waters of this secluded locale. Those seeking more extreme activities can head to the Waimea Bay where big wave surfing originated in the 1950s.
Overlooking these pristine waters, a wonder of nature beckons. Millions of years ago, the Ko'olau Volcano Range began rumbling beneath the surface of the ocean. Following an eruption around 300 000 years ago, the 'Diamond Head’ crater came to fruition. The name was inspired by British sailors who thought they struck wealth when they discovered glittering calcite crystals on the slopes in the 19th century. To experience a panoramic view of the island from atop this volcanic tuff cone, embark on the two-hour Diamond Head hike. More trails await on the edge of Oahu’s southeastern coast where the Makapu'u Point Lighthouse sits on a 183-metres cliff. Beaming with over a thousand prisms, this beacon houses the largest lighthouse lens in the world. To reach this landmark, follow the four-kilometre Makapu‘u Point Lighthouse Trail with a glimpse of Koko crater along the way.
Bring your expedition to a culmination at the Royal Hawaiian, where people come together for a traditional luau to dine and celebrate the local heritage. Alternatively head back to Waikiki for some carnival grandeur. For over three decades, every Friday at 7:45pm Oahu skies glitter with fireworks from the Hilton Hawaiian Village show. Find your ideal pursuit on the island and unleash the adventurer within.
