Perhaps it’s true. Maybe a little boy and his father really did see a dragon flying over the Drakensberg, inspiring the name of the mountain range. One of the most prominent features of this mesmerising region is Cathedral Peak, towering 3 000 metres above sea level. At such heights, there’s bound to be magic in the air. Yet the real enchantment is in the valley below. Here, blades of grass grow taller than the average person, unfettered wildlife amble across trails, and rock art created 8 000 years earlier retains its glory.

To discover one of Cathedral Peak’s greatest marvels, cross the eMhlawazini River and brush aside the bushes on the way to Eland Cave. This mystic cavern is protected by law. Access can only be granted by Amafa, the heritage conservation agency for KwaZulu-Natal. That’s because this region contains sacred San rock art from millennia ago. In more than 3 500 images spread throughout the area, portrayals of life in a different era beckon to adventurers. At Didima Camp, fireside storytelling awakens these tales.

Despite the passing of time, the ecosystem here remains unchanged. The bountiful flora and fauna are rivalled only by the beauty of thundering waterfalls, jagged sandstone cliffs, and plummeting gorges. Give in to the temptation to pitch a tent and set up camp among the wilderness. Eland, baboon, and mountain reedbuck saunter through dense woodland clusters and grassy plains. At the Mlambonja River, trout dash between gushing currents, interrupted only by the occasional fly fisher. In this valley, harmony reigns supreme.

There are many branches off the beaten path to experience this beauty, such as the 15-kilometre Ganabu Ridge and Baboon Rock trail. But the summit of Cathedral Peak is the ultimate hike. The trek isn’t for the faint-hearted. Beginning at the Cathedral Peak Hotel, the staggering ascent of the iconic tower takes a full day to complete. Yet with the risk of engaging the dangerous and dreamy landscape comes a phenomenal reward of panoramic views.

Aside from these adrenaline-filled routes, there’s also a leisurely way to take in the Cathedral Peak area. Follow Mike’s Pass to the top of the Little Berg for satiating sights. The dramatic scenery soothes the soul and ignites the imagination. Pause to savour this wilderness – you might just catch a glimpse of its legendary magic.
