It thunders, but there’s no lightning. The sky is as clear as the waters rushing below. Named the Place of Great Noise for its incredible resonance, the Augrabies Falls rupture the arid land of the Northern Cape. It forms part of the Orange River, which gives life to the surrounding communities.

At Augrabies Falls National Park, the cascades flow from a height of 56 metres, forming an extensive granite gorge. Multi-coloured Augrabies flat lizards, endemic to South Africa, flit among the rocks as dassies jump by. Iconic quiver trees cast silhouettes at sunset. For a panoramic view of the 50 000-hectare reserve, climb to the top of the Moon Rock dome.

From the park, the Orange River continues its journey, coursing through the earth and enriching the soil. A thriving agricultural industry has sprung up on the river banks. The Raisin Company produces every variety of dried grape you could think of, while Die Mas van Kakamas farm crafts a selection of wine and brandy.

No trip to this region is complete without a voyage down the river. Kayaking and white water rafting are popular activities, and through the Khamkirri resort you can enjoy a barge cruise at sunset. Along this lush vein of the Orange River, witness nature in action.
