In this 10-year-old’s writing, the wisdom of her elders lives on
When it comes to experience, elderly people are years ahead. After decades of life, changes in society, and even world wars, they’re able to offer advice like no one else. Which is why 10-year-old Ngcali Metu always listened intently to her grandfather’s stories. “A lot of young people don’t take old people seriously,” she says. “But their lectures only come from a place of love.” When her grandfather passed away, Metu wanted his knowledge to live on.
“All his wisdom, all his stories, and all that he taught me had to be shared with the world,” she says. With a writer for an aunt, Metu was encouraged to put these life lessons into words that transcend not only paper, but generations. Her debut story, The Clever Twins, is about two intelligent sisters that empower and elevate their community. Published in 2019, Metu’s book was so popular that she sold over 300 copies before the official launch.
Using children’s stories to encapsulate what she learnt from her grandfather, Metu is uplifting young writers and readers. It’s also a reminder to never take anything for granted, especially people. “Our elders have so much wisdom to offer,” Metu says. Stay curious and keep learning from those around you.
