Who doesn’t like chocolate? From creamy milk chocolate that envelops the taste buds to bitter-sweet, darker varieties, there’s a flavour for everyone. Charmain Mouton adores these delights so much that she’s redirected her life for them. Her sweet affair began while holidaying in the Garden Route. La Chocolaterie Rococo lured her in with its artisanal charm and stirred a desire inside of her. Mouton wanted to take some of the treats back home. The owner, Marita Lamprecht, had a better idea – why not Mouton make her own?

Mouton was delighted when Lamprecht offered her a mentorship. At 46, she thought her age would be a hindrance but soon discovered otherwise. “You’re never too old to learn,” Mouton says. Proving her determination and skill at crafting chocolates, she became the proud owner of the chocolate shop in 2016. Today, Mouton is teaching the trade to her former domestic worker, Maria. “I feel honoured to be the mentor for Maria that Marita was for me,” she says.

Mouton currently serves 75 flavours of deliciousness at La Chocolaterie Rococo, introducing unique tastes with each season. In summer, customers relish in the tangy smoothness of lemon meringue, while winter warms palates with cinnamon truffles. “I get a lot of joy seeing people’s reaction when they eat our chocolates,” Mouton says. By evolving to do what she loves, she’s bringing gifts of pleasure to others too. “Enjoy every day,” Mouton advises. Life is as sweet as you make it.
