Discover the art of wholesome living in one of the world’s healthiest cities

My Beautiful World
Europe

Life in Amsterdam revolves around wellbeing. This is one of the healthiest cities in the world – and it’s easy to see why. A thriving bicycle culture keeps the locals moving, while the scent of marijuana might trail the breeze as the herb is legal here. In the Netherlands’ capital, people have made wholesome living their art.

To understand the foundation of Amsterdam’s origins, head to the ultimate hub of culture – Museumplein square. Here, the national Rijksmuseum showcases 8 000 pieces of art and is the largest museum in the country. The Van Gogh Museum displays the mastery of the world-famous artist, while the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam holds the works of creatives such as Andy Warhol and Jackson Pollock. A skateboard ramp and playground form part of the square, creating a comprehensive entertainment zone complete with an underground shopping area.

There’s one location that’s making waves in Amsterdam, and that’s because it’s the only market in the world to sit on water. The Bloemenmarkt in the Singel canal is filled with orchids, violets, peonies, and the country’s emblematic flower – the tulip. In the 17th century, Dutch society became enamoured with these blossoms and they have remained an icon of the country ever since.

The ring of canals that crack through this densely populated area is known as the Grachtengordel. Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, these trenches cover over 100 kilometres and keep the city connected. Narrow, gabled homes line the waterways. Within, artisans toil away in their workshops, crafting their products with the utmost attention to detail.

In Amsterdam, an appreciation for heritage meets healthy living. With museums and bicycles in abundance, this city is uplifting for the mind, body, and soul. Experience a flourishing way of life while soaking up Dutch culture.
