The Jewel of the Free State is a town glittering with artistic splendour
The Jewel of the Free State isn’t an object – it’s the town of Clarens, with its glittering wealth of artistic attractions. Set against the backdrop of the Rooiberg and Maloti mountains, this is where South Africa’s most talented creatives come out to play. Quaint boutiques and distinguished galleries make this countryside location an oasis for dreamers.
The route to Clarens ventures off the R712 and meanders through fields of gold and green. Sandstone houses with sprawling gardens and Lombardy poplar trees characterise the town. At its heart is the central square, where musicians serenade the public during food and craft festivals. Complemented by their melodies, the scenery seems designed to inspire.
It’s no surprise that many artists settle here, such as Peter Bonney who captures the landscape with his hyper-realist paintings. For a snapshot of local mastery, head to Blou Donki Art Gallery on Main Street. At Oak Leather, family members skive and sew hides into bags and accessories, while Fritz and Yolande, owners of Bossie Knives, display the blades they make by hand. Down the road, The Ugly Duckling is a hub of homeware, jewellery, and trinkets. But in the Purple Onion Deli, creativity takes an edible turn. Sample the fudges, truffles and konfyt at this farmstall for a taste of Clarens’ homemade delights.
After a stroll around the streets, relax with a latté from Highland Coffee Roastery, pore over the books at Bibliophile, or pick up vintage treasures from the Mona Lisa Garment Gallery. As the hush of dusk descends, streaks of red and orange paint the sky. Restaurant windows and homes light up. Crickets chirp in the veld, lulling the day to sleep.
A must-see stop along Free State’s Highlands Route, the sights and sounds of this town will remain with you for a lifetime. With rustic architecture, detailed crafts, and a community of artists, Clarens is a portrait of perfection.
