Why 2020 is the year we rediscovered our humanity

We stand at the end of an unforgettable year. Twelve months of uncertainty, despair, unrest, and isolation are drawing to a close. Thousands of lives have been claimed by a virus, we’ve been separated from all that was once a given, and now we’re trying to figure out what ‘normal’ looks like.

For many, this may feel like the most disappointing and difficult year in memory. But, despite all the hardship and grief, 2020 presented us with opportunity. Life carried on and with it, hope. Weddings were virtually celebrated, children born, and a global passion for banana bread discovered. Woven in the disasters and heartache, we still found stories of possibility and inspiration.

We dug up the courage to keep fighting for justice after 19 years of being wrongfully imprisoned, the unflagging determination to play golf again after becoming paralysed, and compassion in a natural hair advocate’s fight for girls to love their curls. We found healing in trauma-informed yoga, artistry in a craft honed over decades, and ambition in tackling COVID-19 from a garage. We discovered strength in martial arts for seniors, the joy of cooking with indigenous ingredients, and the resilience rooted in the ancient trees of the Amazon. Together, we unearthed empowering representation for people of colour, upliftment for refugees through baking, and the bonds of trust formed among foster families. In 2020, we rediscovered our humanity.

We got through this year. We can endure anything. We’ve come out the other side stronger and with the clarity of what really matters. 2021 holds promise and purpose for us all.
