Why the Friendly City is on the rise
Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban. Could Port Elizabeth be the next metropolis? Over recent years, it’s undergone a process of rejuvenation and is fast on the rise. Historical locations are being revived. The town is abuzz with people in pursuit of innovation and leisure. Known as the Friendly City, Port Elizabeth is where everyone is welcome.
Preserving historical sites while infusing modern elements, Port Elizabeth has become a hub of creativity. At Donkin Reserve, centuries-old monuments contrast with contemporary art pieces. Built in 1892, the Opera House is the longest running theatre in Africa and has seen the likes of John Kani and Winston Ntshona perform on stage. A 10-minute walk away is the formerly derelict Tramways Building, now an events venue where hundreds gather at the Goodnight Market for artisanal delicacies. Warehouses down the road have been transformed into WERK_, a space for artists to collaborate.
A sense of community pervades the city. Sports matches and concerts unite people at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, while the coastline is constantly stirring. The building of Shark Rock Pier incidentally created Hobie Beach, one of the best for swimming and volleyball. Nearby, Humewood is a snorkeller’s paradise, while Pollok Beach, known as the Pipe, is popular among surfers. Kayakers dot the waters, and those wanting to join can learn through The Paddling Shop. To explore the reefs below, take the plunge with Pro Dive. Cruises along the coast offer the chance to spot whales, dolphins, and a unique view of the city skyline.
For a retreat from the bustle, head to the Cape Recife Nature Reserve at the tip of Algoa Bay. The park is a birdwatcher’s haven, abundant in African black oystercatchers and sleek white roseate terns. A nine-kilometre hike takes you through the reserve towards the 1851 lighthouse that is still in operation today.
A confluence of past and present influences, this city celebrates the history that made it while looking to the future. Port Elizabeth is brimming with verve and promise. Here, the possibilities are endless.
