How Prince Albert became the Karoo’s reigning artistic oasis

My Beautiful World
South Africa

In the remote expanse of the Karoo, one small town buzzes with energy. Prince Albert originated as a farming hamlet 250 years ago. Today, this eccentric community is a shining beacon of creativity in the dusty South African region.

GO: To reach Prince Albert, you must first traverse the historic Swartberg Pass. Designed by Thomas Bain in 1888, the untarred route was carved by the hands of prisoners and snakes between the rough-hewn facecliffs.

SEE: Admire local artwork at the Prince Albert Gallery. From enticing portraits to vibrant-hued landscapes, learn about the tight-knit community, their culture, and home through these works of colour.

On Market Street, ageless antiques are on sale at The Olde Shop. A rusting car at the entrance makes this store hard to miss. Venture within and discover quirky items that have since become vintage treasures.

DO: For a delectable experience, hop on over to Gay’s Guernsey Dairy where a range of cheeses and fresh yoghurts will tantilise your taste buds. Fresh from the farms, each morsel is guaranteed to melt in your mouth and transport you to dairy heaven.

Marvel at the height of 1920s glamour at The Showroom Theatre on Church Street. What started as a car dealership has since been transformed into a world-class performance venue embellished with charm. Enjoy one of the many films or live productions on offer and relish in an evening of classic entertainment.

Sprinkled in allure, this town is a haven of artistry. Join the electric community and dance in celebration of life. In Prince Albert, pride is palpable
