Artisans, surfers, and spectres: everyone is welcome in this seaside city

My Beautiful World
South Africa

Port Elizabeth is overflowing with beauty, but kind hospitality is by far its best attribute. Home to astounding artisanship, monumental attractions, and welcoming locals, this seaside metropolitan is the ideal host. Venture here and discover why people consider this the Friendly City.

GO

Port Elizabeth stretches along the eastern coastline of Algoa Bay in South Africa. As warm currents wash up onto its shores year-round, the bay has earned the title of the bottlenose dolphin capital of the world.

SEE

Overlooking the ocean, Donkin Reserve showcases the city’s rich history and modern-day creativity. Protruding from this heritage trail is a 10-metre stone pyramid, a monument built by the town’s founder in 1861 in memory of his late wife. At its base sprawls the Piazza Mosaic. Formed with vibrant ceramics, it paints a picture of the country’s unique diversity. Climb to the top of the Donkin Lighthouse for a panoramic view of the port.

From Campanile Memorial, embark on an awe-inspiring journey along Route 67. Public art installations dot the city to honour the 67 years of service Nelson Mandela dedicated to the country. Markers lead visitors through this series of striking artworks, which include a line of laser-cut steel voters and a giant geometric fish bird returning to its nest.

For a glimpse of spectres and splendour, head to the Opera House. Built in 1892 on the site of a gallows, it’s the longest running theatre in Africa. Sink into the crimson plush seating and allow thespians or spirits from beyond to send shivers down your spine.

Uncover the city’s creativity at WERK_, a hub for crafters and inventors alike. Wander through these restored warehouses and watch as bespoke lights and pottery vases come to life.

DO

Renowned for its blue-flag beaches, Port Elizabeth’s coastline is a haven for sunbathers and surfers. Rent a board and plunge into a pool of bliss, or kayak into the sunset. Pursue adventure below the surface at Devil’s Reef. Only 100 metres from Humewood Beach, this popular snorkelling spot is an oasis of soft corals, blacktail fish and stingrays.

Indulge in artisanal food at the Goodnight Market. Inside a newly renovated tramway building, impala cheese-grillers sizzle while boisterous locals gather over pints of craft beer.

In Port Elizabeth, the spirit of community, culture, and innovation intertwine. Follow its call into a world like no other.
